Red Bull is one of the most important sponsors in top-level sport. The beverage manufacturer has made countless headlines in recent years. We are thinking here, for example, of the commitments to the soccer clubs in Leipzig and Salzburg or the in-house team in Formula 1. Now the time has come: Red Bull announces three Age of Empires tournaments.
In recent weeks, it has become clear that Red Bull has now also discovered the marketing potential of eSports for itself. The company supports several eSports clans and tournament organizers. Among other things, the cooperation with the Valorant Champions Tour has caused a stir.
A few days ago, Red Bull has now announced the expansion of its sponsorship in a far smaller game series. The Austrians will support three Age of Empires tournaments, whose attractiveness and popularity will of course be additionally increased by Red Bull.
Tournament in three phases with grand offline final in Heidelberg
The Red Bull Wololo tournament is divided into three qualification phases. Specifically, the formats are as follows:
Age of Empires I – Definitive Edition
Age of Empires II – Definitive Edition
Age of Empires IV
All three elimination rounds will be played in different formats. In all rounds the qualification for the offline final in Heidelberg is at stake.
Age of Empires I – Definitive Edition
Age of Empires I is reserved for the best players from Southeast Asia. Age of Empires has the most fans and the largest number of professional players in this region. Age of Empires I is played as an invitation tournament. There is no qualification. Eight stars of the eSports scene will compete against each other. The two best players will then qualify for the final in Heidelberg.
Age of Empires II – Definitive Edition
Age of Empires II will be played as a more open tournament. The four former Wololo winners are seeded. Furthermore, all other players can recommend themselves for the final round via various qualifiers.
The final of Age of Empires II will be played between August 20th and 27th. A total of 16 players will qualify for the final round from the second series.
Age of Empires IV
Those who know the Age of Empires saga know that version IV is the newest part of the game. This is exactly the one that will be used for the Road to Red Bull Wololo Online Cup. Theoretically, every online player can challenge their luck, no matter if they are an eSport pro or a recreational player.
Weekly elimination tournaments are played from June to September, from the first to the third weekend of each month. The best players will then meet again in the monthly finals, from which two Age of Empires strategists will secure their Heidelberg tickets.
The two players with the most points from all months who did not qualify directly will receive a wildcard. The pros have additional qualification opportunities through the Golden League and the Last Chance tournaments.
The Age of Empires Red Bull Wololo Final
The Wololo Grand Final will be held between October 21 and 30 at the castle in Heidelberg, Germany. The pompous venue will be a highlight not only for the qualified players but also for the fans.
Last year, 70,000 fans attended the Wololo finals live. This figure shows the potential of the Age of Empires game series.
