Over the weekend, the League of Legends (LoL) World Championship's Group stage came to a finish.
Only eight teams are left after an amazing two weekends of strong competition and surprising games.
Let's analyze the teams that emerged from Groups and their strategies.
Group A – EDward Gaming & Team1
Fans and commentators alike have referred to Group A as one of the “Groups of Death” because it featured so much action that it was difficult to anticipate who would survive.
The group included the current world champions EDward Gaming (EDG), the most decorated team in history T1, the dominant League of Legends (LEC) team Fnatic, the North American Summer Champions Cloud9 (C9), and the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) team Fnatic.
T1, EDG, and Fnatic tied for first place in the first round of Groups, with Fnatic winning against C9 and T1 but losing to EDG, T1 winning against EDG and C9 but suffering a shock loss to Fnatic, and EDG losing to T1 but winning against T1 and Fnatic.
Despite the Europeans concentrating on putting Lee “Faker” Sang Hyeok on Sylas, T1 were able to exact retribution against Fnatic in a rematch against the third seed in the LEC.
With Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyeong popping off and Faker, on his 100th game, enabling the T1 AD Carry, T1 then continued to win the rest of the day, defeating C9 and effectively eliminating them from the competition.
Despite playing from a deficit, T1 overcame EDG once more and earned the top spot in Group A with a score of 5-1.
On the other hand, because to crucial performances from Tian “Meiko” Ye on Thresh, Nami, and Park “Viper” Do-hyeon on Fnatic, EDG defeated Cloud9 and swiftly eliminated Fnatic.
Even though they had a strong beginning, they were unable to defeat T1. EDG finished with a 4-2 record, earning the second seed in Group A.
Group B – DAMWON KIA Gaming & JDG
The top two teams in Group B were quite obvious, despite being referred to by the crowd as “another Group of Death.”
The Evil Geniuses, DAMWON KIA Gaming (DWG KIA), and G2 Esports were all defeated by JD Gaming (JDG), the League of Legends Pro League (LPL) Summer Champions, in the opening round.
JDG lost a game against DWG KIA despite defeating Evil Geniuses and eliminating G2 Esports in the second round.
On the other hand, DWG KIA overcame G2 Esports and Evil Geniuses despite losing a game against JDG in the opening round.
Then the 2020 World Champions won round 2, thanks in large part to excellent performance from the mid laner Heo “Showmaker” Su and the jungler Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu, as well as the comeback of Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon.
Group C – Team Rogue & DRX
Everyone was surprised by Group C because the majority of fans had predicted Rogue's collapse and Top Esports' advancement as Group C's top seed in the Playoffs.
This most definitely wasn't the case, as the LEC Summer Champions completely destroyed DRX, Top Esports, and GAM Esports in the Groups' first round.
Top Esports only managed one victory in the opening round, while DRX triumphed over both GAM Esports and the LPL second seed Top Esports.
Rogue extended their winning streak in the second round by defeating the top-seeded Vietnamese team, GAM Esports, but they were quickly beaten by DRX and Top Esports, concluding the Groups with a 4-2 record.
In the second round, Top Esports shockingly fell to GAM Esports in their opening match, but triumphed over DRX and Rogue to finish with a 3-3 record.
Group D – RNG & GenG
After blindly selecting Singed and Senna in the drafting round, Gen.G was defeated by RNG in the first round of Groups. Gen.G was severely punished by Chen “GALA” Wei, the carry for RNG.
After defeating CBTC Flying Oyster, the top seed in the Pacific Championship Series (PCS), and the North American team 100 Thieves, they immediately made a comeback (CFO).
But the South Korean Summer Champions were able to get back at RNG in the next round, as they also easily won their matches against 100 Thieves and CFO.
RNG easily completed the first round and carried that momentum into the second. Nevertheless, despite having a strong draft, they were unable to sweep their groups after losing to the current LCK Champions in their final match.
Both teams had a 5-1 record, but Gen.G won the tiebreaker versus RNG to win the top spot. RNG came in second place in Group D.
