Before the start of the 2019 season, Excel Esports may make some significant changes to its League of Legends coaching staff after coming bottom with just one victory during the 2023 LEC Winter Split.
According to esports writer Alejandro Gomis, the club is purportedly parting ways with head coach Joey #YoungBuck Steltenpool and assistant coach Sng #Nelson Yi Wei to make room for new management at the U.K.-based business. Who will be the two coaches' replacements for the forthcoming Spring Split is yet unknown.
The Potential Candidates
Due to the comparatively promising amount of firepower Excel Esports possessed on paper before the new year, many people held the new team in high respect. With players like Odoamne, Vetheo, Patrik, Targamas, and Xerxe on the squad, the ceiling for a newly formed club was considered to be a title contender by many observers and fans.
But when the split got underway, the group found it difficult to put the jigsaw pieces together. The squad was strong in terms of individual talents, but they were unable to develop a strategy that worked with the quality they had available. Excel's failure was caused by a lack of unity and cooperation, as seen by the way they struggled through practically all of their matches.
According to Oracle's Elixir, a competitive League analytics aggregator, Excel not only topped the league in total team fatalities throughout the Winter Split, but they also had the third-worst average gold differential at 15 minutes of any team in the LEC. Odoamne had the lowest KDA in the league, Patrik had the most fatalities, and the squad used the fewest wards of any LEC roster.
The Plans Ahead
Given that the club only has three weeks left to play together before being eliminated from postseason contention, Excel might restart the season with the same roster.
If the organization can locate the best candidate for the role, we can witness Excel stage an incredible comeback when the 2023 Spring Split kicks off. A new head coach might help bring these players together.
