Dota 2 competitive countries are given more Major spots, but the distribution has changed over the past few years. Western European found itself as the top of the food chain, while other areas struggled to stay competitive. Competing in the most competitive area may result in missing one or more Majors or even demotion, as #SumaiL from #Nigma discussed in a recent broadcast.
SumaiL claimed during the show that the WUE Dota 2 region deserved six Major spots. Since there are only eight teams in division one, all non-relegating teams would be moving on to the Championship. SumaiL’s outrageous proposal follows Nigma’s promotion back to the first division. The squad finished sixth in the opening round of the 2023 DPC, falling two spots short of a Major spot and one place short of accruing any DPC point.
“Actually, we should get six slots next season. Whatever our placement is at the DPC, Europe should get as many slots as possible. If you’re in the top seven, Europe should get seven slots”.
Although SumaiL’s proposal was subsequently mocked by both himself and Miracle-, who were both obviously having fun with chat, they aren’t completely without basis. Only Western European and China have four Major places as of this writing. Three of the four WEU teams that competed in the Lima Major entered the main event in the upper bracket, only one Chinese team did the same, as the other two finished last and were eliminated from the competition.
China’s failure at the Lima Major and general performance over the previous year began to cast doubt on the region’s continued candidacy for four spots. Along with WEU, South America may be the next region on this list because of the level of rivalry significantly grew as more sponsors entered the market.
SumaiL is not the only one who has these views. Early in February, WEU worthy of more spots was also mentioned by content creator and division two player Gorgc, as well as Tundra Esports’ 33. The Dota 2 globe appears to be on the verge of a slot-shuffle, in which Valve reevaluates how many Major seats an area should receive based on their most recent performances.
